In commemoration of the 86th anniversary of International Women Workers' Day
Korean Women Workers' Rally in 1994

Today, we affirm the fighting will of 10 million Korean workers in commemoration of international women workers' day. Under the excuse of international competition, the present government provides all sort of exemptions and benefits to industries, but it reinforces labor controls against workers. The government attempts to enact special laws abolishing menstruation leaves and monthly leaves, and to implement varied working hours and frozen wages policies.

We strongly resist the government's policies for reinforcing capital accumulation of cheabols and for worsening workers' working conditions, welfare and organizational levels through the expansion of temporary and dispatched employment under the excuse of increasing international competitiveness. Further, we protest against the government's policies for isolating the labor movement from the social movement by accusing the labor movement of collective egoism.

We will advance with the power to produce, to move toward a new joyful world, to create new life and a new democratic society, and the indomitable power to carry out the movement to break down the wall of discrimination and suppression against the people. We make the following declarations, in the front of the trade union movement to eliminate gender discrimination and to enhance women workers' rights through the 7th Korean Women Workers' Rally in commemoration of International Women Workers' Day.

  • Let's move forward in solidarity to establish socio-political equality and to construct a democratic society.

  • Let's eliminate wage discrimination by gender, industry, occupation, education level, and region, to achieve equal value work for equal pay.

  • Let's establish equal education for both genders in order to eliminate gender discrimination, to end the commercialization of women prevalent in society and to uproot gender discrimination.

  • We are strongly opposed to the enactment of dispatched employment and the expansion of irregular employment.

  • Implement a 20% female employment quota system in the public sector to promote female employment

  • Expand opportunities for vocational training for women to upgrade their skills and abilities, and expand the coverage of employment benefits to companies with more than 5 workers.

  • Let's stop the government and industries from attempting to removing paid menstruation leaves. This attempt will destroy women workers' maternity if no effort for removing long working hours, shift works, hazardous working conditions, low wages, and unequality in the workplace are made.

  • Let's obtain 90 day maternity leaves, leaves for regular medical check-ups in pregnancy, paid miscarriage leaves, and the expansion of paid parental leaves to men.

  • The government and industries should be responsible for costs incurred to ensure maternity protections.

  • Let's obtain the institutionalization of child care facilities on school premises and companies with more than 150 workers, and the expansion of local child care centers with the government's support.

  • Let's stop the government and industries from attempting to worsen labor-related laws. Let's eliminate anti-worker labor laws to obtain the freedom to engage in union activities.

  • Let's obtain the political freedom of trade unions in order to increase workers' political influence.

  • We demand the immediate ratification of ILO agreements and recommendations by the Korean government.

  • Let's obtain 20% female participation in local self-governing bodies whose current participation rate is just 0.9%, in order to improve women's political participation.

We declare to fight in solidarity with all components of the social movement until the day when we achieve our above-mentioned claims.
